Application season is officially here! Now is the time to explore your college options and find your future home.

Many universities send representatives to attend college fairs or host virtual events to connect with students on a deeper level. These events allow you to go beyond websites and brochures and speak directly with people who know the campus best. They also provide a great opportunity to ask the questions that matter most to you on your college journey.

I recently spoke with Mitsuko Leonard, director of undergraduate recruitment at ºÙºÙÊÓƵ, about how to make the most of your time with a college representative. Explore these tips before your next college fair.

Don't just take my word for it — hear from our experts!

“Going to college fairs overwhelms most and it’s comfortable to visit schools you already know about. I want to challenge you to meet first with schools you’re unfamiliar with. Chat with these representatives and learn something new at the beginning of the fair or event when you have energy to expend. Then, circle back to colleges you know about. This way you learn twice as much by the end of the event.â€

Tip 1: Skip the searchable questions

It's okay to ask about rankings but also focus on questions that help you understand a campus’ personality. Is the school located in a small college town or a big city? How does the campus culture reflect that environment? These types of questions give you a better feel for the school and make all the difference as you decide if it fits you.

Tip 2: Think about varying class sizes

It’s easy to get caught up in student-to-faculty ratios. However, this doesn’t help you deduce the actual classroom experience. Ask representatives about the largest class you might attend and the smallest. This gives you a realistic picture of what to expect in any scenario instead of just the average one.

Tip 3: Ask about tuition and other costs

College is an investment. It’s important to understand all the expenses that come with it. Make sure you see the full picture. Ask about living expenses, meal plans and academic expenses. Then, follow up with questions about how generous the school is with financial aid and scholarships to consider if it aligns with your personal financial goals.

Tip 4: Tell college recruiters about you

One of the best ways to connect with a university representative is to talk about your interests. Tell them what you love, your passions, academic interests and ask how or if their school supports those things. Engage with representatives on specifics so that you gain a better idea of your potential experience at that institution.

Remember, these conversations offer a chance to explore what each school provides for your future. Take the time to ask the right questions for you and leave college fairs — or any conversation — with a clear sense of direction on your journey.
