  • Experience a footwear fantasy

Design Museum shoe exhibit is a footwear fantasy

124 Cruess Hall

Stop by the Design Museum to see their current exhibition, 鈥淔rom Concept to Creation: Inspired Shoe Design by Chris Francis,鈥 which showcases the colorful and imaginative footwear created by this Los Angeles-based shoe designer. They are amazing to look at, but if you鈥檝e been walking around to Picnic Day festivities, you鈥檒l be glad they are on display rather than on your feet.

Enjoy the footwear fantasy as you explore the art, architecture and found objects that decorate these creations.

Co-curated by Professor Susan T. Avila and Cristina Gomez, graduate student in design, the installation spotlights creations by shoemaker and designer Francis. His narrative-based, unique hand-constructed shoes theatrically bridge contemporary art and wearable design.

The exhibition has been organized thematically and showcases his amazing craftsmanship and conceptual vision by juxtaposing the creative work with inspirational objects chosen by the curatorial team. The Walter Gropius Chairs and Walter Gropius鈥 Wearable Desk, in the Bauhaus to De Stijl section, features a blocky wooden sandal resembling a desk and a soft yellow heel with couch arms along the sides, replicating the office of Walter Gropius that can be seen in the accompanying reference photo.

In the Brutaliam and Punk section, shoes such as Gutter Punk and Hardcore in the 80s utilize wall fragments, found couch tweed, tar, and broom bristles to create frayed and studded heeled mid-calf boots.

And in Fantasy and Pop, heels such as California Landscape feature detailed architecture and trees along the base and heel of the shoes. There is also a coloring station where you can get a colora print of these shoe designs and see the work of others that have been pinned on the wall.

The Design Museum, part of the College of Letters and Science and free to the public, is in 124 Cruess Hall. The exhibition runs through April 23.
