Lecturer to share his experiences on occupied Palestinian West Bank Oct. 30, Mondavi Center

This lecture, "Freedom and Despair: A View From the South Hebron Hills," is based on 15 years of peace work in the occupied Palestinian West Bank. The speaker, David Shulman, will present a grass-roots view of reality as seen in the tiny encampments and villages of the desert hills south of the city of Hebron. Here Palestinian farmers and shepherds face the threat of expulsion from their lands and homes as well as daily violence from Israeli settlers, soldiers, and policemen. The struggle to help this Palestinian civilian population survive under extreme conditions inevitably confronts us with classic human questions: What does one do with despair? Can it be used to good effect? What does it mean to seek the humane, or the simply decent action in situations of deep ambiguity? Is moral action wedded to concrete results? Does an ethical act live on in the world even if no one witnesses it or knows of it? Can one achieve inner freedom in the face of external cruelty? Is it in our nature to be free? Does the tradition of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King still offer hope?

The speaker is professor emeritus of Indian Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The evening's moderator will be David Biale, Emanuel Ringelblum Distinguished Professor of Jewish History, Department of History, College of Letters and Science, 嘿嘿视频. The begins at 4 p.m. in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre.
