Literary presentation and exhibition coming to TANA

TANA, short for Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer, is a community-based art center managed by the Chicana/o Studies Department at 嘿嘿视频. This month, TANA invites the community to join them for special events at their gallery in .

On Tuesday, March 10, a special literary presentation will be held at 6 p.m. Renowned authors Norma Elia Cant煤 and Marcelo Hernandez Castillo will both speak and read excerpts from their recently published books.

On Friday, March 13, there鈥檚 an opening reception and artist talk for the exhibition Talleres Sin Fronteras at TANA from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This traveling exhibition, derived from the Cardenas Collection of Latino Art, features original monoprints and silkscreen artwork produced at Talleres over the last 30 years, focusing on the themes of borders, migration, and bi-national and transnational movements. Talleres Sin Fronteras will be on display through May 15.

This Thursday, catch piano compositions at the Noon Concert

Shinkoskey Noon Concert: Sakurako Kanemitsu, Solo Piano, Recital Hall, Ann E. Pitzer Center, Thursday, March 5, 12:05 p.m. to 1 p.m., free

  • This week鈥檚 Shinkoskey Noon Concert features Sakurako Kanemitsu on the piano. Kanemitsu will be performing pieces from Beethoven, Bach, and Chopin, as well as a contemporary arrangement composed by 嘿嘿视频 Graduate Student Ryan Suleiman.

Art Graduate Open Studios, TB 9 and Graduate Art Building, Friday, March 6, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., free

  • Always a big campus favorite, the 嘿嘿视频 MFA Art Studio graduate students invite you into their studios to see what they are working on and connect with others from the larger community. The event runs 6-9 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Both the main graduate art building, with 13 studios, and TB 9, with 3 studios will be open and the artists will be present to talk about their work and practices.

Conference: Art of Painting in the 21st Century, John Natsoulas Gallery, Davis, Friday, March 6 through Saturday, March 7, free

  • The free conference, held annually, is celebrating its 12th year in 2020. 鈥...Attendees will hear lectures and watch demonstrations on contemporary painting. The Art of Painting in the 21st Century exhibition will run at the Natsoulas through April 11 and is free and open to the public.

  • Attend workshops at the Manetti Shrem this month led by artist Elizabeth Corkery. You are invited to 鈥渏oin artist Elizabeth Corkery in the studio and explore ways of creating small-scale theatrical environments inspired by the design of Victorian toy theaters. Learn the basics of making these paper structures and set your own mini-stage! Using a variety of narrative and thematic prompts, Elizabeth will introduce methods of combining collage, monoprint and stencil techniques to design and make paper theater scenery.鈥 These workshops are free and no RSVP is required.

  • 嘿嘿视频 Arts describes the new exhibition at the Design Museum: 鈥淭he exhibition features traditional textiles from Africa, Asia and South America collected by Paul J. Smith, Director Emeritus of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. These items have inspired contemporary design works by 嘿嘿视频 students that are also showcased, highlighting the continuing relevance of traditional cultures and how they drive design thinking in new directions.鈥 The Design Museum is open noon. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Feathered Relations: Works by Marwin Begaye, C.N. Gorman Museum, 嘿嘿视频, through Friday, June 19, free

  • The Gorman Museum describes the new solo exhibition: 鈥...Marwin Begaye (Din茅) includes prints, wood blocks, and multi-media works to create a conceptual homage to birds. For the artist, birds are about our relationships 鈥 to nature, to one another, to culture. Marwin Begaye is an internationally exhibited printmaker, painter and nationally recognized graphic designer. As Associate Professor of Painting and Printmaking at the University of Oklahoma鈥檚 School of Visual Arts, his research has been concentrated on issues of cultural identity, especially the intersection of traditional American Indian culture and pop culture.鈥 The museum is open noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

  • Presented by the 嘿嘿视频 Department of Theatre and Dance, this is an informal preview of new choreography in progress created by graduate and undergraduate students. The pieces include a master鈥檚 thesis project by Diego Martinez-Campos and works by undergraduate students Meghan Coates, Olivia Coca, Ana Hansen, Audrey Martel, Eman Moore, Stephanie Nielsen and Aubrey Schoeman. The choreography has been developed under the guidance of David Grenke, theatre and dance department chair.鈥 The performance is free, but those who wish to attend should make a reservation .
