Brewed in Davis

The Davis craft beer scene owes a lot to 嘿嘿视频 alumni.

Brennan Fleming 鈥14 wanted a career making beer.

An avid home brewer when he turned 18, Fleming joined Sudwerk Brewing Co. packaging beer and eventually brewing. He completed both his food science and technology degree at 嘿嘿视频 and the university鈥檚 continuing education Master Brewers Certificate Program while working at Sudwerk full time.

In 2016, Fleming left to launch Dunloe Brewing with his fianc茅e, Emily Putt 鈥11, D.V.M. 鈥16. (She now works at the 嘿嘿视频 Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.)

鈥淭he only way to further my career was to go somewhere else or start my own place,鈥 Fleming said. 鈥淚 got lucky that people believed in me.鈥

Fleming鈥檚 story is an example of the interconnected relationship between 嘿嘿视频 and the craft beer scene in town. His two-year-old brewery is one of three craft breweries to open in Davis since 2016 鈥 and all three have an alum at their helm. In 2016, Jim Houk 鈥98, M.B.A. 鈥11, and six of his friends launched Three Mile Brewing Co. And in 2017, Rachel Vida, J.D. 鈥06, and her husband, Joe Vida, opened Super Owl Brewing.

Despite the competition, it鈥檚 a collaborative industry, Davis craft brewers say. They don鈥檛 hesitate to share information, ingredients or equipment.

鈥淚f someone has questions, or if I have questions, I don鈥檛 feel bad reaching out to other people,鈥 Fleming said. 鈥淚f I need an ingredient that isn鈥檛 going to be delivered in time, then I can see if anyone else has it and maybe get the beer in the tank a day sooner than if I had to wait.鈥

Three Mile Brewing, whose name is a nod to Davis鈥 history with Prohibition, came about when seven friends, six of whom work at Genentech, decided to launch their own brewery after discussing it for years after work over beers. They chose to open in Davis in part because its proximity to campus brings in a steady stream of customers.

鈥淚f you can make a small business that鈥檚 received well and liked within the community, that鈥檚 the end game for us,鈥 said Houk, whose brewery, like the others, supports local causes. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot of social consciousness here, which we appreciate.鈥

Rachel Vida leaned on her 嘿嘿视频 ties to open Super Owl Brewery with her husband. Some of her law school friends became investors, and Vida鈥檚 contacts answered business law questions throughout the opening process. She juggles brewery work with practicing law at a small Davis firm. Joe Vida, Super Owl鈥檚 brewer, has taken several short brewing courses from 嘿嘿视频 Continuing and Professional Education.

The Vidas located their brewery in West Davis, home to many families and 嘿嘿视频 students. 鈥淲e saw a need for a place for people to walk to and hang out. We love that we鈥檝e become a 鈥榯hird place,鈥 as we call it, for people to hang out and meet their neighbors,鈥 said Rachel Vida, referring to an informal social spot for people that鈥檚 outside of the home and office.

Sudwerk operations manager Trent Yackzan said he saw his brewery鈥檚 ties to 嘿嘿视频 as its biggest asset after he started working there about a decade ago. (His grandfather, Dean Unger, launched the business in 1989 with business partner, Ron Broward.)

Yackzan and his business partner, Ryan Fry, bought the brewery in 2013 and rebranded it.

鈥淎side from the nostalgic connection, we found this immense network of former 嘿嘿视频 students and brewers throughout the brewing community that Sudwerk had touched along the way,鈥 said Yackzan, whose lager-focused brewery includes investors and employees who are 嘿嘿视频 alumni.

As the new breweries form their identities, all say they welcome generating tourism and transforming Davis into a craft beer hub.

鈥淚 think more breweries with ties to 嘿嘿视频 just strengthens the story of 嘿嘿视频 as a world-renowned program tied to brewing,鈥 Yackzan said. 鈥淐ome to the school to learn about it, and then come to the town to taste all the beers that the former students are now creating.鈥
