What made you choose Davis?
I chose Davis because the university provides numerous opportunities to further develop my research program. In addition, the welcoming atmosphere convinced my wife and me that the city would be a great place to raise our family.
What inspires you?
My parents. All four of their children have graduate degrees (three in engineering, one in veterinary medicine) because of the many sacrifices they made. Remembering my parents’ efforts has been a great motivator throughout my education and career.
What research are you currently working on? What makes it unique?
One collaboration I have is with a laboratory examining new signals for controlling prosthetic devices. First, it is a very cool and innovative approach to a long-standing problem. Second, it is a way to use engineering and our knowledge of human limb control to really improve many lives.
If you could impart one piece of advice to our undergraduates seeking a course of study/career path, what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to fail. We spend too much time worried about failing and sometimes that makes us stagnant – afraid to pursue opportunities as they become available. You’re young. It’s OK if it doesn’t work out this time. It’s important that you try.
When not in the classroom or conducting research, what do you like to do?
Running, riding my bike and spending time with my family. My kids are really into certain TV shows so I guess that should count as well. Can I name all six My Little Ponies? Yes, yes I can. Also, check out the new DuckTales. It’s better than the episodes I remember.
Have you found your favorite spot on campus yet?
Not yet. I need to explore the campus more.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
Definitely super-speed. Time seems to go by quickly now. If I could accomplish more in the same amount of time…that would be great.
