ٺƵ is literally rolling into its next century, via a centennial event on two wheels.
Actually, four wheels — two on Gregg Whelan’s bike and two on Gary Winters’ bike. Whelan and Winters comprise Lone Twin, a British performance duo that playfully addresses travel, context and orientation.
Starting March 20, they plan to document 30 days in the life of ٺƵ and the Davis community, in an event titled To the Century — honoring the ٺƵ Centennial
Here is how it will work: Each day at about 10 a.m., Whelan and Winters will ride off from the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, on a five- to six-hour bike ride around Davis and the surrounding area, observing and collecting stories about the community.
At 5:30 p.m. each day, Whelan and Winters will present a free, live performance piece at the E Street Plaza, between Second and Third streets, in downtown Davis, with each piece building on the previous evening’s, up until the final, cumulative performance, scheduled for April 18.
“What could be more perfect to celebrate our region — Davis and ٺƵ — than bike-based theater?” asked Don Roth, executive director of the Mondavi Center.
“When we heard about Lone Twin ... we knew we’d found our hallmark centennial event: a theater piece that grows out of the daily bicycle meanderings of our two actors.”
Join them on the road and come out for their performances, Roth urged. “You’ll be part of a unique, once-a-century, only-in-our-town, and region, happening!”
