THE ARTS: Noises Off and Orpheus X join theatre-dance lineup

The Department of Theatre and Dance announced two more plays for the 2007-08 season:

-- Noises Off -- This contemporary farce, to be directed by Artist-in-Residence Jules Aaron, is by Tony Award-winning playwright Michael Frayn. Noises Off is a play within a play that explores the frenzied backstage goings-on during a hilarious, sexually-charged production. Nov. 14-17 and Nov. 29-Dec. 2, Main Theatre.

-- Orpheus X -- Granada Artist-in-Residence Rinde Eckert wrote this play, which was a finalist for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for drama. He plans to present the play, and act in it, one night only at ºÙºÙÊÓƵ: Feb. 16 in Main Theatre, with direction by Robert Woodruff.

The Department of Theatre and Dance describes Orpheus X as a riff on the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.

"The famous rock singer, Orpheus, has locked himself up in his recording studio where he dreams of rescuing the poet, Eurydice, from the underworld," a news release states. "Eurydice, meanwhile, is welcomed to the afterlife by the Queen of the Dead, who offers her something she could never have in the world above."

The one-act play features music by Eckert and video by Denise Marika.
