THE ARTS: Weaving workshop at C.N. Gorman

An introductory course in the basketry technique of twining is scheduled for Oct. 25 at the C.N. Gorman Museum. The teacher is listed as Diana Almendariz, a Maidu, Wintun, Hoopa and Karuk who is a renowned Maidu interpreter and traditional skills specialist.

The workshop, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., is free and open to the public. Space is limited to the 15 participants; to reserve a place, send an e-mail to cngorman@ucdavis.edu.

Organizers said participants will work with tule (bulrush, scirpus) to create medium-sized baskets. Also, Almendariz will look at other kinds of baskets and objects that can be made from tule, and talk about the many uses of tule, past and present.
