Used bicycles for sale
New on campus and need some wheels? Or maybe your bike has been stolen and you need a replacement.
Consider buying one secondhand at the Davis campus's first bike auction of 2008-09. The auction is set for Oct. 11 on the first floor of the west entry garage, off Hutchison Drive just east of La Rue Road.
Hundreds of abandoned bikes will be up for sale, with most of them expected to sell for $20 to $30.
Sale preview is from 8 to 9 a.m. The auction starts at 9 and continues until all bikes are sold.
Shuttle stop relocated
Shuttle buses that run between the Davis and Sacramento campuses are now stopping short of Mrak Hall, due to the construction project at the nearby School of Law.
On Oct. 2, transportation officials relocated the Mrak Hall stop to the front of the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.
The temporary stop will be in place for the duration of the King Hall project, said Clifford Contreras, director of Transportation and Parking Services on the Davis Campus. The project is due for completion next fall.
Contreras explained that bus drivers were having a difficult time maneuvering buses around the Mrak Hall circle, because a construction fence comes right to the edge of the traffic lane.
"It is difficult for the shuttle bus to make the turn without curbing the tires and causing damage to the tires," he said.
He said officials with the Sacramento Campus's transportation unit, which runs the shuttle buses, "determined that this is a serious safety issue."
E-mail system gets name
The new e-mail service for ºÙºÙÊÓƵ students now has an official name: DavisMail.
Powered by Gmail, DavisMail rolled out this week as the campus began migrating more than 32,000 student campus e-mail accounts from the campus central e-mail service, Cyrus (Geckomail). Faculty and staff e-mail accounts are not moving to DavisMail, although the campus will discuss that possibility later.
Migrating the accounts will take most of the fall quarter to complete. The work started Oct. 6 with the students in the Graduate School of Management and School of Law; freshmen come next. A migration schedule and other information is posted at davismail.ucdavis.edu. Students will also receive update e-mails describing the change as the migration proceeds.
Students will keep their existing ucdavis.edu e-mail addresses. They will not need to do anything except accept Google's terms of service agreement. They can opt out of DavisMail by choosing an alternative e-mail service such as those offered by Microsoft or Yahoo.
