Steak Bake 2010

The Retiree Center is calling this year鈥檚 Steak Bake the fourth annual, but the tradition goes back many more years than that 鈥 to the early days of the campus.

The Faculty Club started the dinner, but, when the club went away, so did the Steak Bake 鈥 until its revival by the Retiree Center in 2007, as an annual event for emeriti and retirees and their guests.

The 2010 Steak Bake is scheduled for June 5, with Chancellor Linda Katehi as honored guest and speaker.

The event is set to run from 6 to 9:30 p.m., starting with a social hour and no-host bar, at the Rec Pool Lodge.

Organizers said 鈥渃elebrity鈥 retiree chefs will grill your steak to your liking. The rest of the menu: salad, side dishes, bread, wine and other beverages, and dessert.

The cost is $40 for Emeriti and Retirees association members and guests, $50 for nonmembers and guests.

Space is limited, with reservations being taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. The registration deadline is May 26; the form is available , or contact the Retiree Center, (530) 752-5182 or retireecenter@ucdavis.edu.

Website up and running for pipeline project

A new provides updates on a $3.6 million pipeline construction project in the central part of the Davis campus.

The project is an upgrade to campus鈥檚 network of underground steam and chilled-water lines, primarily used for heating and cooling of buildings.

Here is some of the latest information:

鈥 The contractor, Tidelands Construction Co., this week continued testing new pipelines under the mall that stretches between Hutchison Drive (at Shields Library) and Mrak Hall.

鈥 Tidelands shut down pedestrian and bicycle paths on the west and south sides of King Hall, to make way for more new pipe.

Construction work began in mid-March and is expected to continue until October or November.

Tidelands is installing one set of pipelines between Hutchison Drive and the new Earth and Physical Sciences Building along the arboretum waterway. This will complete a loop in the chilled-water system, allowing it to operate more efficiently with improved hydraulics and pressure, and with less energy consumption.

In addition, the project will bring more steam to the King Hall School of Law, where an expansion project is in its final stages, and replace 1,000 feet of aged and deficient steam lines serving the Physical Sciences Library.

The King Hall path closures are due to remain in effect through Oct. 15, according to the project website. Design and Construction Management (formerly Architects and Engineers) activated the website on May 17.

The website includes schedules, weekly progress reports, utility service shutdown information and contacts.
