IN BRIEF: Academic Senate; Telling stories to children; Sexual Assault Awareness Month

ACADEMIC SENATE: The Academic Senate's Representative Assembly is scheduled to meet at 2:10 p.m. April 14 in MU II at the Memorial Union.

Agenda items include:

  • Proposed revisions to regulations regarding accommodations for students with documented disabilities.
  • A proposal to allow the establishment of special review committees to examine broader issues that may arise from investigations and reviews carried out by the Committee on Privilege and Tenure, the Undergraduate Council and the Graduate Council.

TELLING STORIES TO CHILDREN: Wyatt Hesemeyer will present a children's program at the International House from 2 to 3 p.m. on April 13.

Titled "Musical Journey to the Heart of the Jungle," it will include tales of snakes, monkeys and elephants in the heart of the jungles of Thailand. Audience participation is encouraged. Hesemeyer, a resident of Winters and UC Santa Cruz alumnus, has researched gibbons in Thailand.

The program will take place in the Community Room at the International House, 10 College Park, in Davis. There is a suggested donation for nonmembers ($2 per person or $5 per family). More information: Shirley German at (530) 758-4196, or .

SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH: April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and ºÙºÙÊÓƵ has joined the national effort to bring attention to this subject. Upcoming activities:

  • Sexual Assault Awareness Month Film Festival — 6 to 8 p.m. April 14-16, LGBT Center.
  • Women's Self-Defense Workshop — 5 to 6 p.m. April 14-17. A two-hour introductory workshop in the ARC will offer self-defense techniques designed for women of all ages, body types and physical abilities.
  • Airing Out ºÙºÙÊÓƵ' Dirty Laundry — 5 to 8 p.m. April 16. Sigma Alpha Epsilon, 521 Russell Boulevard, Davis. Make a T-shirt to support sexual assault awareness.
  • Silent Survivor Project — 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 21-25, East Quad. Placed on the front of each silhouette in the East Quad is a true story of a woman's sexual assault experience.
  • Denim Day California — April 25. Wear a pair of jeans this day. Denim Day California is a symbolic response to a court decision to overturn a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans.
  • Candlelight Vigil — 6:30 p.m. April 30, Coffee House, front steps.
  • Women Take Back the Night — 6:10 p.m. May 6. Meet on the East Quad and join in protesting violence against women at the 26th annual ºÙºÙÊÓƵ Women Take Back the Night.
