Unitrans and Yolobus are waiving their fares today and tomorrow (July 16 and 17), in connection with the declaration of those days as Spare the Air days.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District made the declaration as a way to help deal with poor air quality — the result of high temperatures.
The district is asking people to reduce their driving: less driving means less pollution from motor vehicles. Therefore, the district encourages people to postpone errands and form carpools for sports and recreation activities.
Public transit is another option — and free rides are the incentive. Besides Unitrans and Yolobus people also can ride for free on the North Natomas Transportation Management Agency shuttle, Auburn Transit, Lincoln Transit, Placer County Transit, Roseville Transit and El Dorado Transit.
According to forecasts from the air quality management district, ground-level ozone pollution is expected to reach 154 today and 151 tomorrow (July 17), both in the unhealthy”range on the air quality index.
On July 15, ground-level ozone pollution reached a regional maximum of 80, which is moderate on the air quality index.
