The Department of Music calendar is full of evening concerts this month, starting with the Meridian Arts Ensemble, artists in residence, visiting faculty from the Manhattan School of Music.
The ensemble’s program — for 7 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts — is as follows: Lei Liang’s Ascension, Edward Jacobs’ Passed Time, Mark Applebaum’s Magnetic North, Andrew Rindfleisch’s In the Zone and David Sanford’s Corpus.

Concert Band — In the closing event of the annual Causeway Band Festival, featuring the Concert Band, the Meridian Arts Ensemble, the California State University, Sacramento, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and junior and senior high school honor bands. Works by Mark Camphouse, guest conductor and clinician, plus Gustav Holst and Frank Zappa. 7 p.m. Nov. 8, Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center.
Early Music Ensemble — Program not available. 3 p.m. Nov. 15, St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 640 Hawthorne Lane, Davis.
Empyrean Ensemble — ºÙºÙÊÓƵ’ ensemble in residence, in its season opening concert: World Premieres Plus Copland. Stephen Blumberg’s Sundogs for clarinet, bassoon, horn, viola and cello; Ross Bauer’s Symbiosis for clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, viola and cello; Aaron Copland’s Non troppo lento from Piano Quartet (1950); Ed Jacobs’ String Quartet; and Seung-Ah Oh’s Serenade for Four Strings (2005). 7 p.m. Nov. 15, Vanderhoef Studio Theatre.
Jazz Bands — Solo Features, a concert showcasing members of the jazz improv ensemble. Program not available. 7 p.m. Nov. 18, Vanderhoef Studio Theatre.
Gospel Choir — Contemporary and traditional gospel tunes, spirituals and hymns. Program not available. 7 p.m. Nov. 21, Freeborn Hall.
Symphony Orchestra — Opening concert of the orchestra’s 51st season, with Christian Baldini now serving as conductor. Dvorák’s Fifth Symphony; Ginastera’s Four Dances from Estancia; and Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major, featuring guest soloist Eric Zivian. 8 p.m. Nov. 22, Jackson Hall.
