Conference on Endangered-species Laws is Sept. 5

ºÙºÙÊÓƵ University Extension is offering its seventh annual conference on the U.S. and California Endangered Species Acts on Sept. 5 in Sacramento. The conference will address the relationship between the ESAs and other key environmental laws, such as Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and the National Environmental Policy Act. Shifts in federal policy and important court rulings regarding isolated wetlands, critical habitat and habitat conservation planning will be discussed. The effects of recent federal policy directives will be assessed. The conference will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Sacramento Hilton Inn, 2200 Harvard St. Media should register (free of charge) with University Extension, (530) 757-8777. CONFERENCE ON CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES IS OCT. 10-12 On the 10th anniversary of the devastating East Bay Hills fire, ºÙºÙÊÓƵ University Extension will co-sponsor a conference in Oakland on preventing similar fires at the urban-wildland interface. "California's 2001 Wildfire Conference and Public Events" will share the latest research on minimizing losses in California's urban-wildland interface. Conference organizers hope to help the public adopt fire-safe behaviors and to promote interagency cooperation and long-term planning. Conference co-sponsors include the Hills Emergency Forum, numerous University of California units, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, and others.
