Davis to Award About 6,100 Degrees at 11 Commencements

Legendary winemaker Robert Mondavi and his wife, Margrit, will be among the guest speakers at commencement ceremonies of the University of California, Davis, through June 16.

The couple, who donated $35 million to the university, will address the two ceremonies of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences on Sunday, June 16.

The other guest speakers will be Dr. Harry MacDannald, a member of the School of Medicine's first graduating class, at the school's commencement Friday, June 7; author at the Graduate Studies commencement June 13; and developer Carl Panattoni at the Graduate School of Management ceremony June 15.

The campus will award an estimated 6,096 degrees -- including 4,722 undergraduate, 499 master's, 342 doctoral and 533 professional degrees -- in 11 ceremonies. These numbers include degrees earned since last commencement season.

School of Medicine

Dr. Harry MacDannald, a member of the 's first graduating class in 1972 and now director of intensive care units at the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, will speak at the school's commencement at 6 p.m. Friday, June 7, on the Health Sciences Quadrangle. Degree candidate Peter Ash also will speak at the ceremony in which 90 Doctor of Medicine degrees will be awarded.

Graduate Studies

Karen Joy Fowler, who has received acclaim for her short-story collections Artificial Things and Black Glass, will speak at the Graduate Studies commencement in Recreation Hall at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 13. Fowler, who holds a master's degree in political science from ºÙºÙÊÓƵ, has written several novels, and her most recent book is Sister Noon. Graduate Studies will award about 342 doctorates and 499 master's degrees, and recognize one candidate of philosophy at the ceremony.

School of Veterinary Medicine

The will hold its graduation ceremony at noon Friday, June 14, in Recreation Hall. It will award 108 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees, 15 Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine degrees, 11 Bachelor of Science degrees and 28 certificates recognizing completion of residency. Speaking at the event will be Dr. Dwight Hirsh, ºÙºÙÊÓƵ professor emeritus of microbiology, and Daniel Fletcher and Tamara Rose, candidates for D.V.M. degrees.

College of Engineering

The will confer about 465 B.S. degrees in a 6:30 p.m. ceremony Friday, June 14, in Recreation Hall. Sondip Johl, candidate for a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and materials science, will speak at the ceremony.

College of Letters and Science

The will award about 1,821 Bachelor of Arts degrees and 803 B.S. degrees, for a total of 2,624 degrees, in two programs at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, in Recreation Hall.

Nazgol Ashouri, a candidate for a B.A. in international relations and communication, will speak at the morning ceremony, and Leigha Fassett, a candidate for a B.A. in international relations with a minor in Spanish, will speak at the afternoon ceremony.

Graduate School of Management

Developer Carl Panattoni will speak at the commencement of the Graduate School of Management at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15, in Freeborn Hall. He is owner and president of Sacramento-based , the nation's largest developer of industrial build-to-suit projects.

The school will award Master of Business Administration degrees to 61 candidates from its full-time program and 84 from its Working Professionals program. Candidates Pete Anderson from the full-time program and Yvette Bettati of the Working Professionals program, also will speak.

Division of Biological Sciences

The will recognize recipients of some 740 B.S. and 25 B.A. degrees at its 7:30 p.m. ceremony Saturday, June 15, in Recreation Hall. These numbers are included among those degrees awarded by the College of Letters and Science and the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Kegan Warner, a candidate for a bachelor's degree in biological sciences, will speak at the ceremony.

College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences

Robert Mondavi, founder and chairman emeritus of the Robert Mondavi Winery, and Margrit Mondavi, vice president of cultural affairs for the winery, will speak at both the 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. commencement ceremonies of the in Recreation Hall Sunday, June 16.

In September, the couple announced a personal to ºÙºÙÊÓƵ to establish the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science and to name the campus's center for the performing arts, now nearing completion.

Sol Hart, candidate for a degree in environmental policy analysis and planning, will speak at the morning ceremony, and Emily Prieto Holzem, candidate for a degree in the individual major of community rhetoric, will speak at the afternoon ceremony.

The college will award about 1,622 B.S. degrees in the two ceremonies.

School of Law

At a ceremony May 26, the awarded 12 Master of Laws degrees and 163 Juris Doctor degrees.

Degree Numbers

Numbers of degrees include those earned since the last commencement season and estimates of those to be awarded at ceremonies this year. The Office of Resource Management and Planning estimates the number of degrees to be awarded by the undergraduate colleges; Graduate Studies and the four professional schools estimate the number of degrees they will award. An audit of the actual number of degrees awarded is prepared later.

In 2000-01, the university awarded 5,929 degrees including 4,606 bachelor's, 482 master's, 337 doctoral and 504 professional degrees.
