The C.N. Gorman Museum is presenting Visual Sovereignty: International Indigenous Photography — a conference April 4-5 and an exhibition opening April 3 and running through Sept. 4.
The “gathering,” or conference, comprises artist panel sessions on the following topics: “Establishing Visual Sovereignty — Documentary Works by Pathbreakers,” “Political Perspectives,” “Indigenous Studio and Portraiture,” “Visioning Landscapes and Communities” and “Altered Realties.” These sessions are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. April 4 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 5, all in the Sciences Lecture Hall, and all free and open to the public.
The photo exhibition, featuring the works of 35 Native American, First Nations, Inuit, Aboriginal and Maori artists, is scheduled to open with a reception at 5 p.m. April 3, free and open to the public. Organizers said the program will include the Sho-Ka-Wah-Ke dance group from Hopland. Also, the Native American Student Union will serve Indian tacos.
