First Amendment lecture celebrates Constitution Day

The Law School will hold lecture on First Amendment issues in honor of on Sept. 29.

The inaugural lecture by Stanford professor Pamela Karlan will begin at 4 p.m. in the Kalmanovitz Appellate Courtroom at King Hall followed by a reception at 5 p.m.

A noted scholar and award-winning teacher, Karlan is the founding director of the school's Supreme Court Litigation Clinic, where students litigate live cases before the Court. One of the nation's leading experts on voting and the political process, she has served as a commissioner on the California Fair Political Practices Commission and as an assistant counsel and cooperating attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

Karlan will talk about First Amendment issues like the recent Supreme Court decision on campaign contributions and TV cameras in the courtoom, according to Pamela Wu, communications director for the law school.

Karlan's presentation will kick off a five-year lecture series on observance of Constitution Day. The Central Valley Foundation/James B. McClatchy Lecture has been established in the ºÙºÙÊÓƵ School of Law to bring attention to key First Amendment issues.
