The Department of Campus Recreation's Youth Programs division announced a pair of sports camps for children in the campus community. The first is Flag Football Frenzy, for boys and girls, and the second is a Boys Lacrosse Clinic.
Flag Football Frenzy -- For boys and girls in grades 4 to 8, open to players of any experience or ability. Three consecutive Sundays, Sept. 14, 21 and 28, Dairy Road Intramural Field, Hutchison Drive and Dairy Road. $75 for Activities and Recreation Center members, $80 for nonmembers.
Organizers said clinics will be offered the first two Sundays, from 1 to 4 p.m., with instruction and coaching from experienced staff members from Campus Recreation's Intramural Sports program. They plan to teach different skill sets in each clinic.
Then, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the third Sunday, participants can use their newly learned skills and teamwork in a tournament of regulation flag football games.
Organizers said players will be grouped by grade and ability at the start of the program. Players are required to attend at least one of the clinics to be eligible to compete in the tournament. Each participant will receive a camp T-shirt.
"Participation in flag football can provide many great skills," said Andy Ramirez, assistant director for Intramural Sports. "In addition to the usual sports skills such as teamwork, discipline, communication, leadership and collaboration, flag football is an excellent means of developing hand-eye coordination, footwork, and running skills."
And, he said, "It's a great social activity, providing active exercise and great group fun."
