Officials with the ٺƵ Library and Academic Senate confirmed this afternoon (Jan. 31) that contract negotiations between UC and journal publisher Elsevier will continue beyond today — the last day of a one-month contract extension — and that UC still has access to Elsevier journals for now.

This access remains in place until an agreement is reached or until further notice,” reads a memo from MacKenzie Smith, university librarian and vice provost of Digital Scholarship; and Dennis J. Ventry, Jr., law professor and vice chair of the Academic Senate’s University Committee on Library and Scholarly Communication.

Smith and Ventry cited “considerable progress” in the negotiations in January. This followed months of negotiations for a systemwide contract renewal in advance of the Dec. 31 expiration.

“As negotiations continue, we may reach a point where Elsevier will limit the UC’s access to new articles (those with a 2019 publication date),” Smith and Ventry wrote. “If this happens, the library will give the campus community as much notice as we can.”

They encouraged people with questions to send them via email. The ٺƵ Library also invites people to on the status of the negotiations and UC’s access to Elsevier journals.
