Plant breeder Allen Van Deynze earns national recognition, plus honors for David Traill (classics), Eva Mroczek (religious studies), Liz Applegate (nutrition), Brianne Holden (Study Abroad), Daniel Leyson (men’s water polo) and four academic advisors.
The inducted 11 new members — including seven from ٺƵ — in a ceremony today (Dec. 28) at the ٺƵ School of Law.
The nonprofit organization runs the hall of fame, which has inducted more than 600 longtime educators who have “done more than the call of duty.” The inductees with ٺƵ connections:
- Isao Fujimoto, senior lecturer emeritus of community development and Asian American studies, who still teaches, facilitates the Central Valley Partnership for Citizenship and leads a Summer Abroad course in Kyoto, Japan.
- Joaquín Galván, who counseled Chicano and Latino students for 30 years as a retention coordinator.
- Jorge García, who served as a professor of clinical medicine at ٺƵ for two decades.
- Carl Mack, the first chair of the Department of African American Studies and later the superintendent of the Del Paso Heights School District in Sacramento.
- Malaquias Montoya, a professor emeritus of art and Chicana/o studies whose murals can be seen at the Student Community Center and elsewhere in California.
- , assistant adjunct professor, among the founding faculty of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.
- Cruz Reynoso, emeritus professor of law and retired associate justice of the California Supreme Court.
The other inductees: Dave Egolf, retired principal of Davis’ King High School; Sandy Holman, director of the Davis-based Culture C.O.-O.P.; Courtenay Tessler, a counselor and adviser at Davis High School for 21 years; and Ralph Villanueva, a counselor and coach at Davis High School for 33 years.
Patricia Adelekan, the founder and chief executive officer of Youth on the Move, said she wanted to give educators the same honor she once saw athletes receiving at a hall of fame induction in Sacramento.
“There were a lot of retired educators sitting at home thinking the world forgot about them,” she said.
The ٺƵ event followed a larger induction ceremony held last month in Anaheim.
