The Encourage Award is one of three honors given annually by AWG to women and men who advance participation of women in the geosciences.

Charles (Chuck) Fadley, distinguished professor of physics and senior faculty scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, has been elected as an honorary member of the International Science Committee of the International Vacuum Ultraviolet and X-Ray Physics (VUVX) Conferences.

The triennial VUVX conferences deal with all aspects of electron and X-ray spectroscopy. Fadley’s new status on the International Science Committee recognizes his fundamental contributions to the field of condensed matter physics and spectroscopy.

Patricelli is a professor in the Department of Evolution and Ecology. She and her lab team study a variety of topics related to behavioral ecology, bioacoustics and conservation in birds.

Scott Lanyon, president of the American Ornithologists Union, noted his organization’s tradition going back more than 100 years, of “formally recognizing excellence among our colleagues working to advance our understanding of birds and contributing to our scientific knowledge in order to conserve them.â€

U.S. Water Polo recently presented its Monte Nitzkowski Distinguished Men’s Coaching Award to ºÙºÙÊÓƵ head coach Daniel Leyson.

His team was 6-0 in Western Water Polo Association play and 18-8 overall last season, for the program’s best winning percentage since 2007 (22-7). In addition, the 2015 team earned a peak national ranking of No. 9 — matching the program’s highest mark ever, last achieved in 2011.

Shuyang Ling, a doctoral student in the Department of Mathematics, received the 2016 Mathematical and Physical Sciences Dean’s Graduate Student Prize in June. Winners are chosen for their high academic standing, scholarly achievement and a record of outstanding undergraduate teaching.

The $250 award is funded through gifts from Francisco Samaniego, professor of statistics, and others. This year, Ling also received the Alice Leung Scholarship in Mathematics, awarded annually to a graduate student who shows exceptional promise in all aspects of mathematics.
