Media Advisory Reminder: Lake Tahoe Summit

 

What: The third official Lake Tahoe Environmental Summit will be held at Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, Aug. 21. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christine Todd Whitman, Sen. Harry Reid, Sen. John Ensign and Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn join federal, state and university officials to learn about environmental research on the lake and to mark the first appropriation under the Tahoe Restoration Act.
When:

Tuesday, Aug. 21

-- 11 a.m. Research boat demonstration aboard the University of California, Davis, Tahoe Research Group vessel, John Le Conte. ºÙºÙÊÓƵ Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef will host the boat tour. Charles Goldman, director of the ºÙºÙÊÓƵ Tahoe Research Group, will give an overview of environmental research on the lake.

-- Noon. Speeches and announcements by public officials. EPA Administrator Whitman will give the keynote address.

-- 1 p.m. Guests view research displays.

Where: Zephyr Cove Landing Dock, Lake Tahoe
Visuals Media representatives will be able to film the research boat cruise from a chartered press boat. There will also be a pool photographer and a TV cameraman on the research boat. On shore, media will be able to film speeches and viewing of displays.
Press boat: Due to space constraints, media interested in joining the chartered press boat must fax their name, date of birth and Social Security number on news organization letterhead to Sen. Background: This is the third Lake Tahoe summit, begun in 1998 with a visit to the lake by President Clinton and Vice President Gore. Since that original summit, the Tahoe Restoration Act, authored by Sens. Feinstein and Reid, has been passed into law. The act authorizes $300 million over 10 years for research in the Tahoe basin. This year's summit marks the first appropriation, of $21 million, from the act and will address ongoing restoration needs.
Directions: The Zephyr Cove landing dock is located on Highway 50 toward the southern end of the Nevada shore of the lake.
