IN MEMORIAM: Steven J. Seybold, Entomologist

Steven Jon Seybold, a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Entomology and Nematology, and a researcher with the U.S. Forest Service, died Nov. 15 at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, of a heart condition. He was 60.

He was born in Madison, Wisconsin, and earned a bachelor’s degree in forestry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He attended UC Berkeley for graduate school, earning a Ph.D. in forest entomology, specializing in pine bark beetles.

He did postdoctoral work at Berkeley and the University of Nevada, Reno, then served as a research assistant professor at UNR and assistant professor at the University of Minnesota before returning to California in 2002.

His Forest Service assignment was in Davis, at the Pacific Southwest Research Station. He had a research emphasis on chemical ecology of forest insects.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday (Nov. 22) at Smith Funeral Home, Davis. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 23) at St. James Catholic Church, with interment at a later date at Forest Hill Cemetery, Madison.
