The Mondavi Center is winding up the 2008-09 season with some big names: Ravi Shankar and Anoushka Shankar, Yo-Yo Ma, Frederic Rzewski, the San Francisco Symphony and Patti LuPone.
Ravi Shankar and Anoushka Shankar, father and daughter sitar players, in the Masters of Our Time series — 8 p.m. May 13, Jackson Hall. Preperformance lecture by classicial guitarist Matthew Grasso, an instructor at Sacramento City College, 7 p.m., Studio Theatre.
Yo-Yo Ma, cello: Solo Bach Recital — 8 p.m. Thursday, May 14, Jackson Hall. Sold out.
Frederic Rzewski: The People United Will Never Be Defeated (and other Rzewski works), in the Tour de Force: Piano series —8 p.m. May 16 and 2 p.m. May 17, Studio Theatre. Question-and-answer session after each performance.
San Francisco Symphony, with Michael Tilson Thomas, conductor, and Yuja Wang, piano — 8 p.m. May 21, Jackson Hall. Preperformance lecture by Professor D. Kern Holoman, 7 p.m., AGR Room, Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. Ticket availability is limited.
Patti LuPone, in Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda — 8 p.m. May 30, Jackson Hall. In this one-woman show, with piano accompaniment, LuPone belts out Broadway songs — all from musicals “in which she could have played, should have played, did play and will play.” The show list includes Gypsy and Evita (she won Tony awards for her starring roles in both); Hair; Bye, Bye Birdie; Funny Girl; West Side Story; Anything Goes; and Peter Pan. The concert honors Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef, who is moving to emeritus status, and his wife, Rosalie. the concert is open to the public.
