Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef, right, talks with Margrit Mondavi at the June 11 "topping off" ceremony of the first phase of new academic buildings that will house the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science and the departments of Viticulture and Enology, and Food Science and Technology. Between them is a giant corkscrew giant-sized corkscrew and bottle opener used in June 2005 to break ground on the institute. For this celebration, a crane hoisted the final ceremonial beam into place after guests had signed it. The first cluster of three buildings in the $100 million complex will open in October 2008 and include offices, laboratories, classrooms and meeting rooms.
