New guidelines for reporting hate and bias incidents

Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi recently sent the following email to students:

Dear ºÙºÙÊÓƵ Students,
 
In response to concerning acts on our campus last year, I charged the Division of Student Affairs with leading a series of campus climate dialogues with students. I am writing to provide an update on this effort.
 
During the first dialogue on Dec. 9, I heard clearly from students that the process for hate and bias reporting and follow-through needs to be more explicit. In response, Student Affairs has developed draft guidelines for reporting hate and bias incidents. These guidelines, as well as sample communication materials, were shared during a Feb. 13 forum. In summary, students can report incidents online or in person.
 
Students who do not want to file a formal report may contact the , which opened its services to students March 1. It offers confidential, impartial and informal conflict resolution and problem-solving services. The ombuds office is independent from other campus offices, including Student Affairs, and students can talk through concerns off the record, without fear that the discussion will trigger a formal process.
