Field hockey team to get new field

Director of Athletics Terry Tumey says the women’s field hockey program will have a new, $3.2 million field by the start of practice for the fall season.

The construction site is the southeast corner of La Rue and Dairy roads, south of the Dairy Barn and across from the Tercero residence halls. The plan includes a scoeboard, seating area, bike parking and sustainable landscaping on the perimeter.

The field will be smooth and fast, USA Field Hockey-certified, like most other collegiate playing surfaces across the country. The team has been playing in Aggie Stadium, where the artificial turf has longer blades, designed for football and lacrosse, but which makes for slower-paced field hockey.

The team has not played all its “home” games at the stadium; many east coast teams would not come here, because of the field, so the Aggies sometimes borrowed the UC Berkeley and Stanford fields for “home” games.

“This is an exciting step in our program’s development, and we couldn't have done it without those that share our vision, said Tumey, referring to donors, parents, the Athletics Department, and the campus.

“And while we are able to move forward with the project, I see this as the first step. We need to identify additional financial support, and our fundraising efforts are just beginning."

Police nab suspected thieves with 12 bicycles

ٺƵ police officers reported they arrested two bicycle theft suspects early today (Feb. 18), catching them with a dozen bicycles.

Police jumped into action at about 3:30 a.m, after a caller reported that two men had been seen loading bicycles onto a vehicle at the Colleges at La Rue, a student housing complex on La Rue Road.

Officers said they stopped the vehicle on Interstate 80 at the Richards Boulevard exit at the Richards Boulevard exit — and found bicycles on a rack and additional bicycles and bicycle parts inside.

Police identified the suspects as Sutherland Bulkin, 20, and Connor Wikholm, 19, both of Twain Harte (Tuolumne County). They were booked at Yolo County Jail on charges of conspiracy and possession of stolen property.

If you think your bicycle may have been one of those stolen, call the Police Department, (530) 752-1727.

Tips for preventing bicycle theft

  • Use a good quality bicycle lock, and always lock your bike to a bicycle rack.
  • Obtain a bicycle license through Transportation and Parking Services, or TAPS, or a bicycle shop. A license can help in the recovery of your bike if it is stolen.

Mural project in the works, and you can help!

Community meetings are scheduled from Wednesday through Sunday (Feb. 19-23) to gather ideas for a mural that will be painted in the tunnel that runs under the Union Pacific line between the arboretum and south Davis.

The project team said the mural's overall theme has already been selected: the natural history of Putah Creek. The mural's primary goal, according to the team, is to enhance the connection between the arboretum’s new California Native Plant GATEway Garden (at the east end of the arboretum) and the accompanying habitat restoration along the Putah Creek Parkway.
