NEWS BRIEFS: CoHo price hike is first in 4 years

The first price increases in four years took effect this week at Associated Students Dining Services: Coffee House, CoHo South Café and CoHo-to-Go Convenience Store.

The increases, which took effect Sept. 22, average 8 percent. There was no change in the pricing of certain, healthier options, such as whole fruit and yogurt.

“Price increases are never done without a great deal of consideration,” said Darin Schluep, food service director. “Unfortunately, the costs of doing business increased to the point that adjustments were necessary.  We are confident, however, that we still offer the best prices in town on the majority of our menu items.”

He noted these drivers behind the price adjustments: an increase in California’s minimum wage (a $1 increase to $9 per hour) as well as increases in food and administrative costs associated “with maintaining our status as an operation dedicated to serving sustainable, delicious food to our customers.”

AS Dining Services last increased prices in October 2010, after the renovation of the Coffee House.

Regents approve Gillman as Irvine chancellor

The Board of Regents last week approved President Janet Napolitano’s selection of Howard Gillman as the sixth chancellor of UC Irvine.

Gillman, a professor of political science, history and law, was appointed the Irvine provost and executive vice chancellor in June 2013. Then, on July 1 of this year, he became interim chancellor when Michael V. Drake assumed the presidency of Ohio State University.
