Governor appoints 4 to Board of Regents

The UC Board of Regents gained four members Monday (Aug. 6), by appointment of Gov. Jerry Brown. The new regents are:

  • Laphonza Butler, 39, of Los Angeles — She has been the president of the SEIU United Long-Term Care Workers Union since 2010, and was a national division director and campaign director for the Service Employees International Union in Washington, D.C., from 2006 to 2009.
  • Michael Cohen, 45, of Sacramento — He has served as the director of the California Department of Finance since 2013, and before that he was chief deputy director for budget from 2011 to 2013.
  • Cecilia V. Estolano, 52, of Pasadena — A graduate of UCLA (master’s degree in urban planning) and UC Berkeley (law degree), she has been the chief executive officer of Estolano LeSar Advisors (urban planning and public policy) since she co-founded the firm in 2011.
  • Richard H. Leib, 61, of Solana Beach (San Diego County) — He started as president and chief executive officer of Dunleer Strategies (business planning for emerging companies), and served as executive vice president and general counsel at Liquid Environmental Solutions from 2002 to 2017.

Board of Regents Chair George Kieffer and UC President Janet Napolitano issued a welcoming the new regents, with Kieffer saying their diverse backgrounds and expertise “will bring fresh insights to the board and the university as a whole.”

Napolitano said: “I am eager to partner with these accomplished new board members.” Serving on the board, she said, “offers a powerful opportunity to shape California higher education for years to come and ensure that future students receive the same excellent UC education as did previous generations of Californians.”

The appointments are subject to Senate confirmation, but the appointees may begin serving their 12-year terms immediately. All of the new regents except Cohen are Democrats; Cohen registered without a party preference. Regents receive no compensation for their board service.

Volunteers needed for multicasualty drill

It’s only a drill — and you can be part of it. Campus safety officials are seeking volunteers for a multicasualty incident drill to be staged over three days next month: Tuesday, Sept. 4; Thursday, Sept. 6; and Thursday, Sept. 20. Sign-ups are due by the end of next week; people are invited to sign up for one or more days.

“We are currently seeking volunteers to act as patients,” states a flier from the Fire and Police departments, and Safety Services. “Volunteers will be given makeup, simulated injuries and acting instructions.”

Each session will run from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. Lunch will be provided.

“This is an excellent opportunity to get to know your local first-responders and learn more about what they do.”
