Family friendly, outdoor concerts are in the offing next week on the Davis and Sacramento campuses, with both events free and open to the public. Picnicking is welcome at both venues.
Sacramento 鈥 The 嘿嘿视频 Health System and its Community Advisory Board present the third annual summer concert, 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 13, on the lawn behind the Education Building, 45th and X streets. The program lists the Sacramento Metropolitan Youth Choir and The Cheeseballs, performing dance and pop classics, rhythm and blues, funk and hip-hop from the 1970s through today.
Organizers said people are welcome to bring blankets or lawn chairs. Local restaurants will set up food booths, or you can bring your own picnic meals. The event location is smoke-free and alcohol-free.
Davis 鈥 SummerMusic on the Quad is set to conclude Aug. 14 with a concert by Zap Mama, led by Afropean vocalist and songwriter Marie Daulne. Starting time is 7:30 p.m., with the Quad opening for picnics at 6:30 p.m. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
Zap Mama replaces the previously announced Rokia Traor茅, according to the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, which is producing the SummerMusic series for Summer Sessions.
Daulne, born in the Congo and raised in Belgium, launched Zap Mama in 1990. Over the years, it has morphed from an all-female, a cappella quintet into the creative vision of one woman surrounded by talent from nearly every corner of the musical landscape.
Zap Mama鈥檚 latest recording is ReCreation, featuring a rhythm section rooted in a rich Brazilian vibe and offering everything the title suggests 鈥 a time to make a break, to renew and to play. 鈥淭hat moment when you are relaxing and enjoying yourself,鈥 Daulne said in a news release, 鈥渋s the perfect moment to create a new person within yourself 鈥 to heal yourself and let go of all the negative aspects of your life. In those times when you relax, you recreate yourself.鈥 Listen: .
