Not only do firefighters save lives, they spread goodwill for 嘿嘿视频, this month鈥檚 guest on Face to Face With Chancellor May said.

鈥淥ne of the really great things that our fire department gets to do for this institution is be the goodwill ambassador, all across the state and throughout our region 鈥 and at a really special time for people, when they're having a bad day (and facing) a problem they don't know how to solve,鈥 said Fire Chief Nate Trauernicht.

Trauernicht joined Chancellor Gary S. May on this month鈥檚 episode of Face to Face to discuss the path that led him to firefighting, unique programs at 嘿嘿视频 Fire, and personal insights like the music he鈥檚 listening to now.

Career steps

The chief said he knew he wanted to be a firefighter at a very early age 鈥 mementos from his time in preschool show the things he looked forward to the most were new books on firefighting or visits to the local fire house.

鈥淲hen people ask, 鈥榃hat drew you to this?鈥 I don鈥檛 even know, because it鈥檚 really all I鈥檝e ever known,鈥 he said.

Trauernicht told the chancellor he initially thought he wouldn鈥檛 work for the university very long, but fell in love with it; he has served as chief since 2012.

鈥淚t鈥檚 my home and this is my family,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nd I can鈥檛 imagine being anywhere else now.鈥

Unique programs

May and Trauernicht discussed the , where 嘿嘿视频 students live at the fire house while they undergo training and participate in real calls, all while continuing their studies.

鈥淚 think probably one of the most amazing things that we can do in higher education 鈥 is match people鈥檚 academic experience with real-world, hands-on experience,鈥 Trauernicht said.

They went on to discuss , which Trauernicht said is 鈥渞ooted in the idea of mobile, integrated health care.鈥 That program, which is currently being rolled out over several quarters, will look to provide 24/7 treatment for mental health concerns and minor health conditions, in addition to connecting patients to existing services like Aggie Compass and mental health services from Student Health and Counseling Services.
