Renew at the ARC, or Try Before You Buy!
As a new term begins (summer sessions 1 and 2), the Activities and Recreation Center is once again offering its Try Before You Buy promotion.
From June 21 to 27, admission will be free to the facility and all classes. Note: Participation in group exercise (martial arts and dance), is subject to number of spaces available, with priority given to group exercise pass holders and registered instructional program participants.
If you are already an ARC member, be advised that annual memberships expire June 30 — and, if you renew before by that date, you will receive your choice of incentives: a group exercise day pass, a climbing wall day pass, a Fit for Life (55 and up) day pass or a 10 percent class discount at the Craft Center.
Salaried staff and faculty can pay for their ARC memberships through payroll deduction, at $28.33 a month.
Renewals and-or payroll deduction can be arranged at the ARC Member Services Desk, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. (If you are opting for payroll deduction, be sure to bring your university identification card.) More information: (530) 754-5306 or arc@campusrec.ucdavis.edu.
Summertime softball, Ultimate Frisbee
Intramural Sports announced a June 21-25 registration period for summer softball and Ultimate Frisbee leagues, open to students and all other university affiliates, including staff, faculty and alumni.
The leagues include a co-rec softball league under the auspices of Staff Assembly, in connection with the annual Thank Goodness for Staff celebration.
Here are the details:
• Softball — Two regular IM divisions (both "competitive," one for men and the other co-rec, for men and women) and a TGFS division, 10 players on a team. The TGFS division is semi-co-rec, whic means that the co-rec gender rules are not as strict; for example, each TGFS team must have a minimum of three women in the lineup, compared with five for a regular IM co-rec team.
• Ultimate Frisbee — One division (co-rec competitive), seven players on a team.
The IM competitive leagues are designed for all skill levels and abilities. The TGFS softball league is for staff and faculty, regardless of experience.
All three leagues are scheduled to begin July 6, with play scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday (except July 5). Play is likely to continue through the week of Aug. 9-12, but this could vary, depending on the number of teams that sign up.
Individual fees: Students pay nothing, while university affiliates (except those in the TGFS league) are required to have 2010-11 IM cards ($60). Team fees: $30 (for softball or Ultimate Frisbee).
Team registration can be arranged at the IM office, 232 Activities and Recreation Center, Or, you can find the entry form online, and e-mail it to imsports@campusrec.ucdavis.edu. More information is available by calling the office, (530) 752-1730.
Youth sports clinics
Campus Recreation announced the addition of a second weeklong flag football camp this summer. Sign-ups also are being taken for a boys lacrosse clinic.
Lacrosse — For boys entering grades 3 to 12. A two-day clinic focusing on teamwork, acceleration, quick turns and hand-eye coordination, as well as offensive and defensive skills. Coaching by members of the men’s lacrosse club. June 26-27, Russell Intramural Field. $70 for ºÙºÙÊÓƵ students-ARC members; $75 otherwise.
Flag Football Frenzy — For boys and girls entering grades 4 to 8. The clinic is designed to teach the game to young players, although the clinic is open to children with any level of experience. Players are grouped by grade and ability and coached accordingly by Campus Recreation staff. Each camp concludes with a Friday tournament. The first camp, June 28-July 2, is full — which is why Campus Rec scheduled a second camp, July 5-9. Both camps are set to take place on the Dairy Intramural Field. Full day, 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m., $175 for ºÙºÙÊÓƵ students-ARC members; $190 otherwise. Half-day, 8 a.m.–12:30 p.m., $115 for ºÙºÙÊÓƵ students-ARC members; $125 otherwise. Fees include camp T-shirt.
