Teams of volunteers and police officers will see the light, or not see the light, on a safety walk next week in the campus core. They’ll be looking for malfunctioning lights and identifying areas that may need more lighting.
The walk is scheduled for Wednesday, March 9. Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to participate. Meet up at 6:30 p.m. at the flagpole on the Memorial Union’s South Patio. Hot chocolate and snacks will be served before the walk. Take note: Wear comfortable shoes.
Volunteers will work in teams with police officers, who will record any lighting deficiencies and report them to Facilities Management.
The Police Department and Facilities Management collaborate on safety walks regularly, but this one took on added urgency after an alleged assault on a student as she walked near her residence at ºÙºÙÊÓƵ West Village in the early morning hours of Feb. 15.
The lighting review involves much more than the safety walk. are conducting a strategic review of all lighting, and maintenance staff, custodians and groundskeepers have been directed to report all malfunctioning lights. All reports go to Facilities Management, which is expediting repairs.
