Dateline UC Davis presents Part 2 of Summer Diversions, starting with Camp Shakespeare.
The Davis Shakespeare Ensemble and the arboretum are collaborating on the camp, with two two-week sessions planned: Monday-Friday July 25-Aug. 5 and Aug. 8-19.
The camp is open to ages 7 to 15, and children of all experience levels are welcome. The fee is $500 for either session, including snacks and beverages. ٺƵ staff, faculty, affiliates, students and alumni are eligible for $100 scholarships, under a Davis City Arts Grant, to help defray the cost, according to the ensemble.
A flier states: "With our amazing actors leading the way, we will learn theatre skills, play awesome games, and, of course, put on a show!" — referring to an evening performance, the last day of each camp, for family and friends.
The organizers said the camp will be centered around A Midsummer Night's Dream. (Come late summer and early fall, the ensemble itself will be presenting the same play in the arboretum gazebo, Thursdays through Sundays, Sept. 15-Oct. 2.)
The Camp Shakespeare "classroom" will be the Wyatt Deck. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with early drop-off and-or late pick-up options available at additional cost.

Other summer diversions include Summer Jam-uhs, a "vision board" exercise at a Career Catalyst brown bag, a talk by our very own "Pudding Guy" and more SummerMusic on the Quad, all free, plus the UC Davis Family Picnic at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. As of July 21, Staff Assembly had sold 485 tickets for the picnic — with hundreds more tickets available, and extended deadlines to buy your tickets by mail or in person.
Also, are under way at the Craft Center Gallery, the C.N. Gorman Museum and the Neslon Gallery. The lobby of the Shields Library hosts exhibits as well.
The diversions
• Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh! — Summer Jam-uhs are scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. July 25, and Aug. 8 and 22, on the grass just north of the Rec Pool. Consider going for a swim first!
• Career Catalyst brown bag — Mark Guterman will lead “Clarify Your Career Direction Using ‘Vision Boards,’” in which participants will create collages from magazine images and headlines. “The session will begin with a brief exercise called Future Perfect, where participants will try to imagine their work life in perfect harmony, where they are using their talents, values and strengths in the best ways possible,” Guterman said.
Then the workshop participants will be invited to create their visions, literal or symbolic. “They can use their vision boards to jog their memory, to motivate themselves and to keep the possibility of their dreams alive,” Guterman said.
Scissors, glue and mounting boards will be provided, along with magazines, although you are welcome to bring your own if you wish. Noon-1 p.m. Thursday, July 28, Cabernet Room, Silo. No reservations are necessary. Presented by Staff Development and Professional Services.
• “Frequent Flier Miles 101 and Travel Tips from the Pudding Guy” — David Phillips, director of the Davis campus’s utilities division, gained national and international fame — and his nickname — in a food manufacturer’s promotion 12 years ago, turning in bar codes from 12,500 pudding cups in exchange for 1.25 million frequent flier miles. He will be sharing his story and offering tips from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, in Ballroom A at the Activities and Recreation Center. No reservations are necessary. Look for a feature story in next week's edition of Dateline ٺƵ.
• ٺƵ Family Picnic at Six Flags — All ٺƵ affiliates, including those with the ٺƵ Health System, and friends and families, are welcome to join in the fun at the Vallejo theme park, on Saturday, Aug. 6 (park hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.).
Tickets: $35 per person, for everyone 3 years old and up (children under 3 will be admitted free). The price includes an all-you-can-eat picnic (2-4 p.m.). Vouchers are available for $5 parking (normally $15).

Mail-order — Staff Assembly needs to receive your order by Wednesday (July 27), to allow sufficient time for your tickets to arrive by return mail. If your order arrives after that date, you will need to go to the Human Resources Administration Building to pick up your tickets, rather than having them mailed to you.
In-person — Tickets will be sold July 28-29 and Aug. 1-3 at the HR Administration Building (Orchard Road just west of La Rue Road). Hours are 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Payment must be in cash (please bring exact change), or check or money order payable to "UC Regents." Please call the Staff Assembly coordinator, Tiva Lasiter, at (530) 752-0988, before coming to HR, so that your order can be filled and waiting for you.
• SummerMusic on the Quad — Non Stop Bhangra, an Indian dance party. 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13; the Quad opens for picnicking at 6.
