Let’s start with all things heat-related, as in the temperature inside our offices and the hot coffee many of us cannot do without.
Sorry to say, but all retail operations for beverages and food will be closed from Dec. 24 through Jan. 3. So bring your own! See detailed listings below.
Building thermostats will indeed be set back, as has been standard operating procedure during winter break since 2008-09 — but for fewer days this season. In years past, we lowered the temperature on the four administrative holidays and the days in between — accounting for the fact that many employees take off those in-between days. Many departments and units, in fact, shut down from around Christmas through New Year's.
This year, however, if you’re coming to work on the in-between days — Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 28-30 — surprise! The heat will be on.
Utility officials point out that more and more campus buildings in recent years have been equipped with occupancy sensors for heating (and air conditioning) — so, if no one’s around — the heat doesn't come on anyway.
Still, for greater energy savings during winter break, the campus will continue to lower the heat on the administrative holidays and the weekends that follow. So, the thermostat setback is as fokllows: Dec. 24-27 and Dec. 31-Jan. 3. The setback applies to all buildings where the campus already routinely lowers the heat on weekends. Lab space is excluded.
Questions about the thermostat setback? Call the Facilities Management Customer Support Center, (530) 752-1655.
Departments that close for winter break can also help with energy conservation by turning off the lights and office equipment. The offers more details.
