Construction at North and East Entries

Construction will start Monday (June 18) on the Memorial Union’s North Courtyard, to make it more inviting and better match the surrounding areas.

The $1.5 million project will add seating, lighting and wi-fi coverage in the area immediately outside the MU. A rain garden, shade trees and other landscaping will soften the area.

Concrete work and other hardscape is scheduled to be completed before fall quarter, with landscaping continuing after that.

Memorial Union to Gain New Services for Basic Needs

�ٺ��Ƶ will soon make it easier for students to find resources for basic needs like food, housing and access around campus.

Three vacant spaces in the Memorial Union’s east wing will be filled by the Aggie Compass Basic Needs Center, a new service to point students toward resources to help fulfill basic needs like food, housing and financial wellness; and Student Disability Center and ASUCD Pantry satellite locations. Openings are scheduled for later this spring, with grand opening events forthcoming. Negotiations are underway to fill a fourth space.

Students, faculty and staff have spent a few weeks now exploring its new and familiar features, but the renovated Memorial Union received a proper welcome back last week.

Students with the various campus units located inside the recently reopened building helped cut a ribbon before welcoming visitors inside.

A Student's View: Happy to Have the MU Back

One of the reasons why I decided to choose �ٺ��Ƶ was the famous underground bowling alley. I would always hear alumni and people talk about it. I had been in tours around campus during my high school years, but never had the chance to check out the bowling alley. Last year when I got accepted into �ٺ��Ƶ, I was so excited to finally check it out and go bowling with my friends. Once I got here, I was very surprised and upset to find out that the MU was being remodeled and I wasn’t able to go bowling.

First the Sacramento River Cats and then the Sacramento Kings honored our men’s and women’s basketball teams for their terrific seasons, and then, April 24, came official recognition — in the form of resolutions —from both houses of the state Legislature.

The men’s team made it to the Division I NCAA Tournament for the first time, and the women’s team advanced to the third round of the National Invitation Tournament. Go Ags!

After two years of construction, �ٺ��Ƶ’ signature lounge is ready to reopen this coming Monday (May 1).

Furniture is going in and crews are putting the finishing touches on the $23.5 million renovation project, which was delayed by surprises like features that didn’t match schematics.

A grand opening event is scheduled for noon Thursday, May 18.

Memorial Union Nearing Completion; Freeborn to Be Renovated

As the finishing touches are being put on the Memorial Union renovation, plans are forming for the future of its northern courtyard and Freeborn Hall.

The MU’s nearly two-year renovation will be complete in the spring, and the building will officially reopen April 3.

“The building will have one cohesive feel, consistent with its original intent,” said Greg Secor, senior project manager with Design and Construction Management.

Memorial Union Renovation Builds on Original Open Concept

When the Memorial Union was first built in 1955, it was meant to feel open and spacious. Over the decades and through numerous renovations, that feeling changed — but it’ll be back when the building reopens in December.

“We’re going back and respecting the original architect’s design,” said Greg Secor, senior project manager with Design and Construction Management. “This builds off the positive aspects of that original open floor plan.”

Campus Store to Reopen in Memorial Union June 6

�ٺ��Ƶ’ main bookstore reopens next Monday (June 6) with a new name, a new look and a bevy of new features.

The Campus Store is part of a Memorial Union renovation that began in March 2015 and is due for completion by the end of this year. The store is the first section to be finished, which means textbook sales are coming back from their temporary home in The Pavilion and the contractor can start work in the union’s east wing, which has been the temporary home for much of the rest of the store.

Memorial Union emptied as construction continues

The first two floors of the Memorial Union’s north and east sections are about as empty as they have ever been as construction crews continue to gut the interior as part of a construction project to modernize and make the building more open and airy.

Campus staff donned hard hats and toured the site earlier this month to get a glimpse of the work in progress.
