Waterway Pump Delayed, but Arboretum Mostly Open

Work on a new pump and pathways continues along the far eastern portion of the Arboretum Waterway, and some fences remain in place, but the majority of the arboretum is open. An email blast Thursday afternoon (Dec. 21) declared: “As always, we are open! Winter is a great time to visit the arboretum.”

The pump is at Lake Spafford, to move water to the waterway’s east end near downtown Davis. The return flow to Lake Spafford goes over five newly installed weirs — in a system that adds oxygen to the water, and limits duckweed and algae from growing and collecting.

The big news, waterway steward Nina Suzuki says, is that the construction dam is down and water is back in parts of the Phase 1 project area (the eastern half of the waterway). The big question is, “Is the project done?” The answer is, not yet!

NEWS BRIEFS: UC Learning Center Offline, July 28-Aug. 7

UC’s online learning management system, used by staff and faculty for professional development and required trainings, as well as registration for other programs, is scheduled to be offline for nine days, starting at 5 p.m. Friday, July 28, to allow for a system upgrade.

Officials said the UC Learning Center, when it comes back online on Monday, Aug. 7, will have a more contemporary interface and will be compatible with all web browsers. Users will not lose any of the data they had in the system prior to the upgrade.

NEWS BRIEFS: New Options for Disability Insurance in 2017

The UC Office of the President got an early start on 2017 open enrollment by announcing new disability insurance options and expanded eligibility for such insurance, giving employees the opportunity to have greater financial peace of mind.

Besides basic coverage, paid for by the university, eligible employees will be invited to sign up for Voluntary Short-Term Disability (benefits up to six months); Long-Term Disability (benefits after six months, up to the employee’s Social Security retirement age); or both, depending on the employee's needs and budget.

SURFACE WATER PIPELINE: A contractor is building this line under Howard and Russell fields to deliver a new water supply to the campus. The water will come from the Sacramento River by way of a new treatment plant that also serves Woodland and the city of Davis.
