Stack Parking Comes to Gateway Structure

Stack parking has come to a new location on campus: the Gateway Parking Structure at the south entry.

With valet-like attendants in place as of Monday (Feb. 4), Transportation Services is now able to fit 75 more cars into the garage. The attendants will instruct drivers to park in the aisles once all regular spaces are full, and the attendants will move cars as needed to allow other drivers to exit. Those who plan to work late on campus may need to bring an extra set of car keys. Not including stack parking, the Gateway Parking Structure can hold about 700 vehicles.

NEWS BRIEFS: Crew Returning From Thomas Fire

Campus firefighters are coming home after two weeks assisting in the fight against the Thomas Fire in Southern California.

The four-person crew — Joe Newman, captain; Kyle Dubs, engineer; and Lindsey Dubs and Ryan Tooley, firefighters — left Dec. 5 in Brush Truck 34 for Ventura County. They hit their 14-day maximum deployment today (Dec. 19) and will depart for home on Wednesday, Fire Chief Nate Trauernicht said.

NEWS BRIEFS: Stack Parking Is Back, Vanpool Meeting Set

A vanpool information meeting is scheduled for next week — just as stack parking starts up again.

Stack parking — It resumes Monday (Sept. 25) in the Quad Parking Structure and Lot 47 (off La Rue Road near the Tercero residence halls) and will continue all this academic year, according to Transportation Services (TAPS).

It’s normal for the winter weather to push more people to drive to campus instead of walking or biking. It’s not normal for some of the campus’s parking lots to be more than 90 percent full.

While Transportation Services, or TAPS, works to develop additional strategies to avoid the very expensive cost of building another parking garage, it will provide a temporary solution: stack parking.

As empty parking spaces become harder to find at �ٺ��Ƶ, transportation officials are readying a stopgap while they plan new ways to encourage faculty, staff and students to take alternative transportation.

“As the campus population grows, more people are likely to drive unless we develop additional incentives that support our customers’ needs,” said Cliff Contreras, director of Transportation Services, or TAPS.
