Luis Carvajal-Carmona Champions STEM Diversity

Among the Academies: Solving Outbreak Mysteries

As a wildlife veterinarian in Florida in the 1990s, Christine Kreuder Johnson could think of only one place to turn for help when she faced mysterious die-offs of birds and sea turtles: �ٺ��Ƶ.

Johnson had previously worked as a veterinarian to horses competing at the racetrack, but found herself increasingly drawn to puzzles at the population level, like the one she now faced at a national wildlife refuge. But she needed help.

“I had all the puzzle pieces, but I couldn’t put it together,” she said.

Presidential Awards to Faculty

Several faculty at the University of California, Davis, are among the recipients of presidential awards for excellence in STEM mentoring and research announced by the White House Jan. 13 and 14.

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring was established by the White House in 1995 and is administered by the National Science Foundation. The most prestigious mentoring award bestowed by the White House, it recognizes mentors who work with underrepresented groups to fully develop the nation's human resources in STEM.

New Plans Seek to Streamline Building Evacuations

�ٺ��Ƶ Department Safety Coordinators, or DSCs, have worked together with Emergency Management to update the process and documentation for implementing building evacuation plans, establishing a repository of newly approved Emergency Action Plans.

Emergency Action Plans, or EAPs, contain procedures that are to be followed during emergencies, outlining actions that will promote safe evacuation from buildings.

Updated: Campus Joins Together to Provide Support for LA Fires

Updated 3 p.m. Jan. 24: �ٺ��Ƶ Fire Department Capt. Steve Dunn returned to campus Wednesday night from his assignment battling the Eaton Fire in Los Angeles County, Interim �ٺ��Ƶ Fire Chief Nathaniel Hartinger said.

With his return, all �ٺ��Ƶ Fire Department personnel who were assisting in Southern California have returned safely to campus.

The Eaton Fire was still 14,000 acres but had reached 95% containment as of Thursday morning, Cal Fire said.

Aggie Square: Redefining Sustainability in Commercial Development

A key element in the vision of Aggie Square is sustainability — a broad concept that encompasses and inspired the massive project’s design at all levels, from its use of all-electric energy sources down to the details of reducing the carbon footprint from transporting materials with the use of locally produced brick and glass envelope. The sustainability goals set by the University of California system are ambitious, and Aggie Square is poised to exceed them.
