One of the books in the “Magic Tree House” series for children takes a brother and sister to the Egyptian pyramids.

Brooke Morey of Redwood City, California, was 8 when she joined the characters on that adventure and read the book’s nonfiction companion about the pyramids and mummies. “I was just hooked.”

Then and there she resolved to become an Egyptologist. “Every decision I’ve made in regard to my academic career has been with that in mind.”

Senior Amanda Portier of the University of California, Davis, led the team of hundreds that put on this year’s Picnic Day — attended by tens of thousands of people and believed to be the largest student-run event in the country. She also has been a mentor to individuals with intellectual disabilities, shed light on social justice issues and achieved a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average.

But the Folsom resident found his place on the highly ranked campus, threw himself into research and internships, earned two degrees in just three years, and now takes the honor as its top graduating senior.

A psychology major - whose educational and career goals were influenced by her opportunities to conduct research during undergraduate studies at �ٺ��Ƶ - has won the campus's top academic honor.

Jacqueline Teague, who earned a 3.96 grade point average on her way to a bachelor of science degree, will be presented with the University Medal and a $500 honorarium from the Cal Aggie Alumni Association at the 9 a.m. commencement of the College of Letters and Science on June 15.

Galvin will receive the University Medal and a $500 honorarium during the College of Letters and Science's commencement at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 17, in Recreation Hall. She will graduate with a bachelor's degree in psychology.
