Some of Rebecca Calisi’s first lessons in animal science came from her experiences growing up on a cattle ranch along the Texas-Mexico border. There she learned about the mix of cattle known for their dairy production and ability to thrive in sweltering heat — a great dual-purpose animal.

Calisi, an assistant professor of neurobiology, physiology and behavior, previously had been afraid to talk about her upbringing in her lectures about animal behavior.

Last year, at the abandoned Idomeni train station in Greece, I spoke with Kurdish sisters from Syria. They were living in a makeshift refugee camp on the nearby border with Macedonia. Just a week before, a small boat had carried them across the Aegean from Turkey. Back home, the women, both in their 20s, had studied health sciences at the University of Aleppo.

The Davis Farmers Market, held every Wednesday evening and Saturday morning in Central Park, attracts about 60 vendors and hundreds of customers each time — a far cry from the humble beginnings when farmers outnumbered customers.

In 1970, the Apollo 12 crew dodged catastrophe on its way to the moon, Ford rolled out the first Pinto, California re-elected Ronald Reagan governor — and the �ٺ��Ƶ School of Veterinary Medicine threw open the doors to its $6 million Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

As the only tertiary, or third-tier, veterinary referral center in California, it quickly drew patients from throughout the state and as far away as Japan.
