Construction Managers Come Full Circle at Aggie Square

For Joshua Chavez, working on Aggie Square was something of a homecoming, even though he’d only passed by the site of the Sacramento innovation district.

A 2021 graduate of �ٺ��Ƶ who majored in managerial economics, Chavez helped to manage some of the early, pivotal work on the Aggie Square site in 2023 — such as bringing power, water and sewer lines to the 11-acre site, which is a partnership between the university and Wexford Science & Technology LLC.

George Baxter has a Ph.D. in organic chemistry, but he was not made for life in the lab. Baxter’s role is expanding the university’s traditional roles of teaching and research to include catalyzing innovation, enterprise and entrepreneurship.

“To me it has always been about the doing, the impact,” Baxter said. “I’ve enjoyed science my whole life and obviously there is the fantastic intellectual stimulation of discovering new things. But what I’ve found really interests me is taking that discovery, putting it into the world and seeing it make a difference in people’s lives.”

New Medical Technology Emerges From Quarter at Aggie Square Program

The Quarter at Aggie Square Biomedical Engineering cohort wrapped up their 10-week experience on Dec. 6 with a presentation of three medical prototypes for growth-accommodating heart valves, noninvasive glucose monitors and stroke-detection devices. The students chose the concepts to solve complex health challenges they encountered.

A key element in the vision of Aggie Square is sustainability — a broad concept that encompasses and inspired the massive project’s design at all levels, from its use of all-electric energy sources down to the details of reducing the carbon footprint from transporting materials with the use of locally produced brick and glass envelope. The sustainability goals set by the University of California system are ambitious, and Aggie Square is poised to exceed them.

Hundreds of people gathered steps away from Aggie Square’s future public square today (Sept. 19) to hear Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg’s final State of the City address, in which he held up the innovation district as a model partnership that can improve the city and region.

“I chose to deliver my last State of the City speech here at Aggie Square because it represents everything I believe a city should aspire to,” Steinberg said.
