In what is now California, close to 100 Indigenous languages were spoken before Europeans arrived. According to UNESCO, most of the languages native to the Americas are critically endangered 鈥� many others are entirely extinct.

Linguist Lewis Lawyer, a 嘿嘿视频 alumnus, has compiled the first-ever published description of one of those languages, Patwin 鈥� originally spoken in hundreds of communities in Northern California.

Cochlear implants have been widely used, but not all children respond well to the devices, which bypass most of the ear to connect a microphone to the cochlea in the inner ear. Researchers at the 嘿嘿视频 Center for Mind and Brain, supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, are studying how deaf children with cochlear implants use various brain areas to process sound. The goal is to come up with interventions that will help children better adapt to the implants.

Both an alumna and employee of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, she plans to research land management practices and agroforestry important to the Kandy area of Sri Lanka.
