The right to free speech is part of our American identity, but what if some forms of speech use this idea of freedom against us? Increasingly, certain forms of speech — hate speech and disinformation in particular — threaten our society and the many freedoms we might take for granted.

Updated March 30: Both subjects who were arrested are not affiliated with �ٺ��Ƶ. The Yolo County district attorney’s office has filed charges on both for threats on a police officer, conspiracy to commit vandalism, vandalism and resisting arrest.

Chancellor May Comments on March 14 Student-led Event

University of California, Davis, Chancellor Gary S. May addresses distress within the campus community over a student-led event tonight (March 14) organized by Turning Point USA (TPUSA) at �ٺ��Ƶ. He notes that TPUSA, as a registered student organization, has the right to reserve university facilities and invite speakers of their choice, and that the university faces a heavy burden under UC policy to deny such requests over concerns of violence.

Experts: Free Speech Protections Apply to All

The nation’s laws around free speech aren’t perfect, but they beat the alternative of letting the government decide what can and can’t be said, experts said last week at a town hall on campus.

“It's a deeply flawed system,” Michelle Deutchman, executive director of the University of California National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement, said of the First Amendment. “And yet I am hard-pressed to find a better example of how we should do things.”

The �ٺ��Ƶ Campus Town Hall on Free Speech at Public Universities, including a panel discussion, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, in the multipurpose room of the Student Community Center.

Guest Chancellor to Address ‘Free Speech on Campus’

UC Irvine Chancellor Howard Gillman tackled that question in a recent book, and he will come to �ٺ��Ƶ next week to discuss the topic in a public lecture (it will also be livestreamed).
