Nick Tyler renewed his mandatory CPR and AED, or automated external defibrillator, certifications just two days before he met Bill Cocke at the ARC.

Good thing, we can all agree.

In January when Cocke, then 70, was working out and his heart stopped, Tyler was one of three Campus Recreation student employees who came to the rescue.

“It was so fresh and so perfect,” Tyler, a rising junior from Novato, California, said about his CPR knowledge and the timing of the recertification course.

Starting Today: Fire and Police Training at Haring Hall

�ٺ��Ƶ fire and police personnel will train for three days this week — starting today (Aug. 29) — on responding to an active shooter incident, to be staged in and around the unoccupied northeast wing of Haring Hall at the corner of Storer Mall and California Avenue.

Fire Department Team Joins Caldor Fight

�ٺ��Ƶ firefighters have joined the massive effort to stop the Caldor Fire’s eastward advance near Lake Tahoe.

The crew took off for Tahoe on Tuesday (Aug. 31), just a couple of days after another campus crew returned from the McFarland Fire.

Fire Captain Recognized for Vaccine Clinic Efforts

Part of the job of rounding up people to inject vaccines into arms at �ٺ��Ƶ went to Fire Capt. Scott Hatcher, and now he’s being recognized for work that resulted in a crew of student and career firefighters and EMTs working alongside nurses at the campus’s COVID-19 vaccine clinic.

The California Emergency Medical Services Authority announced it had chosen Hatcher to receive a Meritorious Service Medal, to be presented during a virtual awards ceremony July 1.

EMT Program Named Best ‘Hands-on’ Course in Nation

The �ٺ��Ƶ Fire Department EMT certification class has been named the best hands-on training in the nation, recognition for a course so popular that the most recent group filled in 40 minutes with almost no marketing.

“That program every quarter has about 400 people on the waiting list,” said Fire Chief Nate Trauernicht. “It truly is an amazing program.”

Collision Briefly Blocks Old Davis Road

Old Davis Road near westbound Interstate 80 was briefly closed Wednesday evening (Feb. 26) following a collision between two cars. �ٺ��Ƶ police and fire responded to the accident about 5 p.m., and police issued a WarnMe alert advising drivers to avoid the area.

The incident was cleared and the road reopened by 5:30 p.m. There were no reports of injuries requiring transport.

Police, Fire Departments Present Awards

The campus Police Department recently presented UC Lifesaving Medals to four officers for a rescue at the �ٺ��Ƶ Medical Center in April 2018.

Chief Joe Farrow and Capt. Mark Brunet, the department’s new second-in-command, presented the medals during the department’s annual Employee Recognition and Swearing-In Ceremony and Cadet Graduation.

Camp Fire: Donation Drive Wraps, Veterinary Response Continues
