The University of California, Davis, today (July 19) celebrated milestones in two major student housing projects: The Green at West Village is completed and work on the Orchard Park apartment project is officially underway following a ceremonial groundbreaking.

A new visitor is making the rounds at the University of California, Davis’ West Village neighborhood.

Through June 1, San Jose-based Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corporation’s (SAIC) Innovation Center is demonstrating its automated, all-electric shuttle around a defined loop of the solar-panel-lined West Village community as part of an agreement between the auto company and �ٺ��Ƶ.

The state court ruling on AFSCME’s request for a temporary halt to construction on the West Village housing project affirms that the Regents’ decision to move forward with the long-range development plan is sound. It reflects an understanding of the urgent need for student housing that �ٺ��Ƶ is addressing with the West Village project. The project will provide 3,300 new student beds, opening up potential housing for others in the community.

West Village Expansion to Start Construction

Construction of the West Village Expansion student housing project at the University of California, Davis, is set to begin before the winter holiday, with a formal groundbreaking ceremony to come in early 2019.

“This project is part of the significant commitment we’ve made to our students and to the community to provide on-campus housing for 100 percent of any growth in new student enrollment,” said �ٺ��Ƶ Chancellor Gary S. May. “I’m thrilled we can move forward in the new year.”

NEWS BRIEFS: Come on Out to Welcome Our New Students

Let’s all turn out to give a giant welcome to our new students next week, by lining up to cheer them on as they pass under an inflatable, blue-and-gold arch outside The Pavilion. Faculty, staff and returning students are encouraged to participate.

The arch will be waiting as the classes of 2018 (transfers) and 2020 (first-years), along with new international students, emerge from the New Student Celebration at 5 p.m. Monday (Sept. 19), en route to dinner and Resource Fair on Hutchison Field.

�ٺ��Ƶ to Build 1st 50 Homes for Faculty and Staff at West Village by 2018

�ٺ��Ƶ announced that it will re-engage with its plan to build housing units for faculty and staff in West Village, a planned zero-net-energy community that sits on university property. The project is designed to help recruit and retain employees faced with the high cost of housing in the Davis area while meeting ambitious energy saving and sustainability goals, Acting Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter said.

�ٺ��Ƶ West Village Tracks Its Progress Toward Zero Net Energy

�ٺ��Ƶ West Village, the nation’s largest planned zero net energy community, continues to work toward its goal of producing 100 percent of the energy it uses.

A report released today by �ٺ��Ƶ and the West Village Community Partnership LLC said the community is 82 percent of its way toward reaching zero net energy, or ZNE. The analysis covers the time period between September 2013 and August 2014.
