Holiday Music Lineup Includes Well-Being Ticket Deal

For your seasonal well-being: The Boston Brass will perform holiday music from the Big Band era, in a Dec. 16 concert at the Mondavi Center. The concert is your Well-Being Ticket Deal for December.

The Department of Music and the Mondavi Center Presenting Program are offering up holiday concerts to suit a variety of tastes.

鈥 The 嘿嘿视频 Concert Band will perform Grant Cottier鈥檚 鈥淔antasy on an Old French Carol-No毛l des Oiseaux,鈥 among other selections, while also hosting the Yolo Community Band for music from The Nutcracker Suite and The Polar Express, with video.

鈥 The University Chorus will present a program of Spanish and Latin American Christmas music from church and village.

鈥 As part of the Mondavi Center Presenting Program, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will present Johann Sebastian Bach鈥檚 complete Brandenburg Concertos, providing 鈥渟piritual fulfillment for music lovers of all faiths and beliefs.鈥

鈥 The Boston Brass, another show in the Mondavi Center Presenting Program, will perform swinging seasonal chart-toppers made famous by bandleader Stan Kenton and his orchestras.

鈥淭he concert features pieces inspired by the folk music of agricultural societies of Europe, China and the United States,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nd we are so excited to host our good friends of the Yolo Community Band.鈥

鈥 鈥 Works derived from folk music, including Chen Yi鈥檚 Suite from China West (China), Satoshi Yagisawa鈥檚 Machu Pichu, Gustav Holst鈥檚 Second Suite (England) and Cottier鈥檚 鈥淔antasy on an Old French Carol-No毛l des Oiseaux鈥 (France).

In his first concert as the new director of the chorus, Caleb Lewis leads a concert in two parts: 鈥淓n la iglesia鈥 (In the Church), featuring 16th-century sacred polyphony from the Iberian peninsula; and 鈥淓n el pueblo鈥 (In the Village), featuring Christmas carols sung throughout Spain and Latin America, including such favorites as 鈥淐ampana sobre campana鈥 and 鈥淣i帽o lindo.鈥

, succeeding Jeffrey Thomas, who retired from 嘿嘿视频 but continues as the music director of the San Francisco-based American Bach Soloists.

Lewis recently completed his coursework for a Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) degree from Indiana University鈥檚 Jacobs School of Music. He will be finishing his dissertation 鈥 an English edition in Byzantine chant of an ancient Christian hymn to the Virgin Mary, the Akathist Hymn to the Theotokos 鈥 while teaching at 嘿嘿视频. He also has degrees in choral music from Furman University, Greenville, South Carolina; and Emory University, Atlanta.

The ensemble鈥檚 lively repertoire, touched with humor and personality, attempts to bridge the ocean of classical formality by delighting audiences with an evening of great music and boisterous fun.
