Mary Croughan, provost and executive vice chancellor, sent the following message to students this evening (Dec. 2):
Dear Students, Faculty, Academic Appointees and Staff,
The quarter is nearing a close, and with the continued UAW strike, I regret the uncertainty and challenges experienced by all of you.
As you are aware, all negotiations are being handled by the University of California, Office of the President (not ºÙºÙÊÓƵ), and are ongoing. Thank you to our faculty and staff for your many efforts as you carry out additional responsibilities to support our students, research and communities.
We continue to seek ways to reduce anxiety and stress as the fall quarter nears its end. We are implementing several strategies to support you, which are outlined below. Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we work through this together.
I want to reiterate that ºÙºÙÊÓƵ respects the protected activities of employees and is committed to not retaliate or take adverse actions against those engaging in legal labor action. This includes international students who are here on visas. We remain dedicated to your education at ºÙºÙÊÓƵ and your continued success.
Students
- The Academic Senate has demonstrated great flexibility to accommodate challenges associated with the strike, including extending the deadline for you to request Passed/Not Passed or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading to the last day of instruction for this fall quarter. As communicated earlier this week, the deadline is 11:59 p.m. today, Friday, Dec. 2. If you were unable to complete the request by the deadline, please contact your academic advisor.
- In the event an Instructor of Record does not submit a grade, NG (no grade) will appear on your Student Record prior to the start of the winter quarter. NG will not impact your financial aid status, GPA, academic standing, NCAA eligibility, veteran benefits or visa status.
- Each quarter, colleges identify students who are subject to dismissal based on academic standing. We are asking academic advisors to work with students who were not in good academic standing when they entered fall quarter and who were unable to improve their academic standing because of the strike. We also are asking academic advisors to work with students who are not in good academic standing following fall quarter as a result of the strike.
These actions collectively help to protect students on financial aid and students working to achieve good academic standing. Again, please reach out to your academic advisor with any concerns or questions.
We know this can be a stressful time of year and want to remind you that resources are available to support your well-being on the .

To assist with the increased responsibilities taken on by our faculty, we have extended the deadline to submit grades from December 14 to December 28. If you have not yet submitted your grades, a reminder will be sent on December 28 and every two days thereafter.
